Public School Education
Hammond public schools are part of the Tangipahoa Parish School System. Hammond takes education seriously and is home to two International Baccalaureate World Schools that give students— and parents—an even greater opportunity for success.The public schools in Hammond take pride in making sure their students get the preparation they need for their future. What began as a pilot magnet program at one Hammond school, which was the first magnet school in the parish, has now evolved into several magnet programs at most of our Hammond schools.
Woodland Park Elementary Magnet School (Pre-K-K) specializes in communications with an emphasis on reading, writing and oral speaking. As a result, students develop critical thinking skills and learn to appreciate various viewpoints. Students are given opportunities for public speaking, reporting the news and writting communication with the assistance of a variety of technology tools.
Hammond Westside Montessori School (Pre-K-6) strives to create a rigorous Montessori environment in which students can achieve their potential and where all people respect themselves, others and the environment. Class activities are hands-on and lessons are based on the individual needs of the learner.
Hammond Eastside Elementary Magnet School (Pre-K-8) is an authorized IB World School, Primary Years Programme (PYP). As such, Hammond Eastside is part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world. The positive results of the PYP will become evident in our Hammond community as classes of PYP students graduate and undertake activities that enhance social, cultural and economic environments locally, nationally and, perhaps, internationally.
Southeastern Louisiana University Lab School (K-8) is a collaborative effort of the Tangipahoa Parish School System and Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education and Human Development. The Lab school is accredited by the Louisiana State Department of Education and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is located in the Southeastern Louisiana University Charles E. Cate Teacher Education Center, which is a specially designed learning facility including instructional classroom areas, music, art and physical education facilities, a media center, a science laboratory, a story theater, and a computer lab.
Hammond Junior High Magnet School (7-8) strives to ensure every student develops and succeeds as a life-long learner of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Students learn to think critically, solve complex problems and drive advancements in science and technology at Hammond Junior High Magnet School.
Hammond High Magnet School (9-12) is an authorized IB World School, Diploma Programme (DP) and aspires to develop internationally minded lifelong learners through high quality educational programs and rigorous assessment. Through the embodiment of the learner profile, students are prepared to successfully function in a global society. Hammond High Magnet School also houses a medical program which currently consists of five paths: emergency health care, health professionals, nursing, pharmacy and sports medicine.
Parochial EducationHammond is a well-rounded city, and with that comes the opportunity for learning in an environment that also focuses on other aspects of life. Seven private schools—including four religious-based schools—also put Hammond on the edge of education. Private schools offer students and parents a different type of education, from pre-school to high school graduation.
Southeastern Louisiana University 4-Year Accredited CollegeSoutheastern Louisiana University, the state’s third largest institution of higher education, is located in the heart of the Florida Parishes and serves as a major educational, economic and cultural center for the region.
Southeastern offers 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Emphasis is placed on ensuring academic quality in programs through national accreditation of all degree programs offered. The university’s highly recognized teacher preparation program—one of the largest in Louisiana—was the first to guarantee the performance of its teacher Education graduates to area school systems.
The nursing program has been recognized twice in the past five years as the “best nursing school in the state” by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation.
Southeastern is the second largest provider of distance education in the state, offering courses through video, internet and cable television to hundreds of students throughout the nation and in several foreign countries.
Courses are also offered at satellite centers in St. Tammany Parish, Livingston Parish, and in Baton Rouge.
A major employer in southeast Louisiana, Southeastern provides work for nearly 1,700 faculty and staff. With more than 15,000 students, the university has a significant economic impact on the region, estimated at approximately $450 million annually in a 25- mile radius.
