City seeks volunteers to help with Safe Communities America program

HAMMOND---The City of Hammond is looking for individuals and groups to volunteer in the city's effort to become an official "Safe Communities America" project member.

Mayor Mayson Foster announced Tuesday that the city will hold five informational sessions later this month to encourage and recruit volunteers to help in this effort.

Safe Communities is a World Health Organization designation, recognizing dedication to improve the quality of life and save lives by reducing unintentional injuries and deaths.

The National Safety Council serves as the Support Center for the program throughout the United States.

Foster said Hammond's nomination and application for membership in this program is a "prestigious designation" for the city.

"The Safe Communities America program is a natural fit for the City of Hammond," Foster said. "Throughout my entire administration, our city leaders have focused on creating a Quality of Life in Hammond so that people choose to come here to visit, live, learn, work, relax, recreate, shop, and do business while feeling safe, serviced, and satisified. That is our city mission, and the Safe Communities America program fits perfectly within the scope of what we are trying to do in Hammond."

Volunteers will have five opportunities to attend information sessions on the program. Those meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m, and Friday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

All of the meetings will be held in the Hammond Council Chambers, located at 312 E. Charles St. in downtown Hammond.

Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center Appoints Leadership

[ HAMMOND , LA ]—The Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center Board of Directors announces the appointment of Patti Tregle of Albany as Executive Director and Michael Zatarain Jr. of Hammond as Assistant Director.

As Executive Director, Tregle will be responsible for working in collaboration with the Board of Directors to provide leadership in the areas of strategic planning, operations, exhibit and program development and management, fundraising, marketing and staff and volunteer supervision.

“With nearly 20 years of experience in business and community leadership roles, Patti’s enthusiasm and professional reputation will truly be an asset to the museum. As we enter the final stages of planning in anticipation of opening in spring 2010, we look forward to working with her to move this project to completion,” says Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center Personnel Committee Chairperson Guy Recotta Jr.

An alumnus of Southeastern Louisiana University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing, Tregle comes to the children’s museum from her most recent role as publisher of “Tangi Lifestyles” magazine. Her previous experience also includes the roles of chief operations officer for AmMax Publications Inc. of New Orleans for 3 years, account executive for Gagliano Group Inc. of Hammond for 15 years and development director for St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School in Hammond for 3 years. She is a 2009 graduate of Leadership Tangipahoa and serves as a Hammond Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and is actively involved with its Membership and Marketing Committees. In addition, she belongs to the Hammond/Ponchatoula Sunrise Rotary Club and is a past board member of the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation.

As Assistant Director, Zatarain will be responsible for the museum’s day-to-day operations and guest relations program.

“Michael’s energy and enthusiasm will be a valuable asset to the direction the museum takes as it creates programs for the youth of our community,” Recotta observes.

Zatarain, who has recently returned to Hammond from Houston , earned a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science and general studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette . His prior professional experience includes working for Neill Corporation in the roles of marketing and communication manager and transportation coordinator. His background also includes working as a volunteer with Boys and Girls Club, as well as many other youth programs. In addition, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for

7 years and assisted with recovery efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

The Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center will be located at 113 North Cypress in downtown Hammond . The museum will feature interactive exhibits designed to cultivate creativity and lifelong learning. Planned exhibits will reflect the unique history, geography, plant and animal life, industry and heritage of the Florida Parishes.
