Mayor Mayson Foster announced Tuesday that the city will hold five informational sessions later this month to encourage and recruit volunteers to help in this effort. Safe Communities is a World Health Organization designation, recognizing dedication to improve the quality of life and save lives by reducing unintentional injuries and deaths. "The Safe Communities America program is a natural fit for the City of Hammond," Foster said. "Throughout my entire administration, our city leaders have focused on creating a Quality of Life in Hammond so that people choose to come here to visit, live, learn, work, relax, recreate, shop, and do business while feeling safe, serviced, and satisified. That is our city mission, and the Safe Communities America program fits perfectly within the scope of what we are trying to do in Hammond." Volunteers will have five opportunities to attend information sessions on the program. Those meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m, and Friday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. All of the meetings will be held in the Hammond Council Chambers, located at 312 E.
